TL;DR

John Lewis is launching a YouTube chat show and a social media studio for a reason that has nothing to do with viewers. Large language models weight third-party discussion and fresh content when they compose an answer, so the retailer is manufacturing both. Twelve months ago, 0.3% of its customers were finding products via tools like ChatGPT. That figure is now 2.5%.

The mechanics

The Gift List vodcast is presented by Angela Scanlon, with Louis Theroux on the opening episode and guests discussing presents they have given and received well or badly. Six episodes run to Christmas, with more if it works. Clips will be cut for other platforms. The template is Waitrose’s Dish podcast, which worked for the sister chain.

The studio matters more than the show. Outgoing managing director Peter Ruis described being able to respond within days to a live cultural moment — filming around the Bayeux tapestry show at the British Museum, on the expectation it revives interest in cross stitch, or the Harry Potter television series before Christmas. That capability, he said, now sits alongside the Christmas television advert and the “never knowingly undersold” pledge in importance.

Why the eightfold jump is the story

Two and a half per cent of customers is still small. The trajectory is not. Ruis reported growth across all age groups, and an eightfold rise inside a year is the kind of curve that becomes a channel before most marketing plans are rewritten. Generative engine optimisation has arrived as a board-level budget line at a household British retailer, with a named presenter attached.

The constraint is that the tactic is hard to measure and impossible to buy directly. You cannot bid for placement in a model’s answer. You can only produce the kind of third-party material the model prefers to cite, and wait.

Looking forward

Ruis departs at the end of this week, just short of three years in post, denying any strategic split with chair Jason Tarry and pointing to a record summer for air conditioning, fans and garden furniture. Half-year figures come next week. He wants budget help on business rates next month, and described an economy where “inflation is kicking in and the fuel pump is costing people a lot of money” — a reminder that the AI visibility problem is being solved by a retailer with tighter constraints than the technology sector that created it.
