British consumers have drawn a line between AI that helps them shop and AI that spends their money. Research from the MACH Alliance, which polled over a thousand UK consumers, finds 67% using AI during search and discovery — but only 9% comfortable letting it complete a payment unsupervised. The average sum they would delegate is £149.12.
Where the line sits
Adoption at the discovery stage is close to universal among younger shoppers: 89% for Gen Z, rising to 92% among millennials. Willingness collapses once money moves. A third want AI to do the research while keeping the product choice and the spending decision themselves. For complex or high-consideration purchases, the share happy with autonomous payment drops to 4%.
Age changes the ceiling but not the shape. Millennials would hand over £235 on average; baby boomers stop at £67. Every group draws the line somewhere, and for most it sits below the price of a decent appliance.
Against what retailers are building
The timing is pointed, because merchants are actively wiring discovery to checkout. JD Sports is pushing towards payment experiences led by AI with less delay in between. Debenhams has been testing AI-driven checkout inside Meta’s shopping environments. The consumer data suggests the market for that is currently 9% of shoppers.
Jason Cottrell, president of the MACH Alliance, attributed the hesitation to execution rather than principle. “Tackling the AI trust gap will depend on brands’ ability to move agentic AI from influence to reliable execution across the entire buying journey,” he said, arguing that the stacks beneath these agents must let them work precisely and safely over everything from fulfilment and payments to live stock levels and product records before shoppers will hand over more.
Looking forward
For UK retailers, the design implication is concrete: build explicit approval points rather than end-to-end autonomy, and set them lowest wherever a purchase is costly, rare, or difficult to undo. That sits alongside our earlier coverage finding that being named by an AI is not the same as being picked — recommendation and conversion are separate problems, and this research shows the second one has a price tag attached to it.
