Mayor Steve Rotheram has named 15 people to a new AI Task Force for the Liverpool City Region, chaired by Nicola Hodson, previously chief executive and chair at IBM UK and Ireland. Its remit covers inclusive growth, public services and the 1.6 million people who live there. Its first meeting comes after the AI Summit the region hosts in October.
Who is on it tells you the strategy
Three of the named members point in the same direction. Kate Warriner runs transformation and digital at Alder Hey and chairs the digital skills development network for the North West, bringing paediatric NHS delivery. Katherine Royse directs the STFC Hartree Centre — a national supercomputing facility that happens to sit at Daresbury, inside the city region’s own boundary. Gary McAllister covers healthcare and life sciences as a chief digital officer at Dell.
Health, compute and skills, in other words, rather than inward investment announcements. It works alongside Tiffany St James, who holds the combined authority’s chief AI officer post, and a separate academic network supplying research input.
A different bet from the one dominating the headlines
Most UK regional AI news this year has been about where to put the buildings. MSPs are weighing a freeze on Scottish data centre applications, and West Yorkshire’s mayor has been defending Microsoft’s Leeds site against local objections.
Liverpool is arguing about use instead of siting. That is a cheaper bet and a slower one, and it depends on whether an advisory board can move procurement inside six local authorities and an NHS estate. Preston is running the adjacent experiment, testing whether AI training actually reaches young people not in work or education.
Looking forward
The measure of this will not be the calibre of the membership, which is plainly high. It will be whether anything the task force recommends survives a combined authority budget round. Advisory bodies with distinguished chairs are a familiar British answer to hard delivery questions; the ones that matter are those given something concrete to commission. The October summit, and what is funded immediately after it, is the tell.
