Only 14% of UK learners feel ‘highly AI-ready’, study finds

The findings point to an execution gap rather than an access problem: students are using AI, but few can demonstrate they can apply it to real work. Pearson’s UK chief executive Sharon Hague framed the risk bluntly — world-class institutions and adaptable graduates count for little “without the right skills” to translate potential into the workplace.
Exposure is not proof
AWS’s Valerie Singer drew the sharpest line: “The gap isn’t access, it’s the distance between exposure and proof.” Employers, she argued, want evidence graduates can solve real problems with AI, not a list of tools they have tried. The report proposes an “AI Readiness Friction Framework” urging faster curriculum cycles, deeper employer feedback loops, investment in teaching staff, and AI embedded “in the flow” of coursework rather than bolted on.
The data reinforces a theme running through recent UK coverage. London employers have already warned of a widening AI skills gap, and the ONS found firms adopting AI widely but shallowly — the same shallowness now visible on the supply side of the labour market.
Looking forward
The prescription — apprenticeships, integrated tooling, faster institutional decision-making — is unobjectionable but slow, and it sits against high youth unemployment. For UK employers, the near-term implication is that “AI literacy” on a CV signals little without demonstrable application, pushing more hiring weight onto portfolios, practical assessment and structured work experience. For universities, it adds pressure to embed AI in coursework at the same moment many are still deciding how to police its use in assessment at all.
