TL;DR
Perplexity has launched “Computer,” a general-purpose digital worker that unifies multiple AI models into a single system capable of running complex workflows for hours or even months. Rather than relying on a single model, Computer orchestrates specialist models for different subtasks and is available now for Perplexity Max subscribers.
What Computer does
Perplexity Computer goes beyond chat interfaces and single-task agents. Users describe an outcome, and Computer breaks it into tasks and subtasks, creating sub-agents for execution. These sub-agents handle web research, document generation, data processing, and API calls to connected services — all running asynchronously and in parallel.
Each task runs in an isolated compute environment with access to a real filesystem, browser, and tool integrations. When Computer hits a problem, it creates sub-agents to solve it — finding API keys, researching supplementary information, or coding applications if necessary. It checks in with the user only when it genuinely needs input.
Multi-model orchestration
The core technical differentiator is multi-model orchestration. Rather than building on a single AI model, Computer uses Claude Opus 4.6 as its core reasoning engine while deploying specialist models for specific tasks: Gemini for deep research, Grok for lightweight speed tasks, ChatGPT 5.2 for long-context recall, and specialised models for image and video generation.
Perplexity argues that as models specialise rather than commoditise, the most powerful AI system is one that can orchestrate all of them. Users can also choose specific models for specific subtasks, giving control over token budgets.
Positioning in the market
Computer represents an evolution of Perplexity’s existing products — building on its deep research capabilities, AI-native Comet browser, and persistent memory features. The company frames it as the natural conclusion of model-agnostic design: if no single model excels at everything, the winning product is the one that deploys each where it performs best.
Looking forward
Computer is available now to Perplexity Max subscribers, with Enterprise Max access coming soon. The product positions Perplexity in direct competition with agentic AI offerings from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic — but with a distinctive bet on multi-model orchestration rather than vertical model development.
