TL;DR
Google’s January announcements mark a shift toward “Personal Intelligence”—AI that anticipates needs and understands context. Key releases include Gemini app personalisation, Chrome’s auto browse for multi-step tasks, Agentic Vision in Gemini 3 Flash, and expanded AI features in Gmail at no cost.
Personal Intelligence Arrives
The centrepiece of January’s announcements is Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app. Users can now securely connect Google apps including Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and Search to make Gemini contextually aware. The beta is currently available in the US as an opt-in feature, with users choosing which apps to connect.
This personalisation extends to AI Mode in Search for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, enabling tailored recommendations for shopping and travel based on connected data.
Chrome Becomes a Productivity Partner
Chrome’s update, built on Gemini 3, introduces “auto browse”—a feature that handles complex, multi-step tasks like booking travel or scheduling appointments on the user’s behalf. The browser also gains Nano Banana for image transformation and a reimagined side panel keeping Google apps accessible during browsing.
Agentic Vision: From Passive to Active
Gemini 3 Flash introduces Agentic Vision, which changes how the model processes images. Rather than analysing a single static snapshot and guessing at unclear details, the model now actively “explores” images. Google states this delivers consistent quality improvements across most vision benchmarks and reduces hallucinations. The feature is available via the Gemini API in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.
Education and Retail Expansions
At the BETT conference in London, Google announced partnerships with Khan Academy for literacy tools and Oxford University for student access to Gemini and NotebookLM. Free SAT and JEE Main prep through partnerships with Princeton Review, Careers360 and Physics Wallah now appear in the Gemini app.
At the National Retail Federation, CEO Sundar Pichai unveiled the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)—an open standard for agentic commerce enabling checkout directly within AI Mode and the Gemini app.
Looking Forward
These updates signal Google’s direction: AI that moves beyond answering questions to actively completing tasks and anticipating user needs. The combination of personalisation, agentic capabilities and expanded access through education partnerships suggests a push to embed AI more deeply into daily workflows.
