TL;DR
The Government Digital Service has published a comprehensive roadmap for digital government through to 2030. Key initiatives include scaling AI tools across public services, expanding the GOV.UK app (now downloaded 316,000 times), and pursuing £45 billion in efficiency savings.
One Year of Progress
A year after launching its blueprint for modern digital government, GDS has detailed substantial progress across its six-point transformation plan. The roadmap brings together products, platforms and initiatives planned across the entire public sector.
The GOV.UK app, launched as a kickstarter project, has been downloaded over 316,000 times. GOV.UK Wallet now houses its first credential with the digital Veteran Card, available to over 2 million former Service Personnel. Testing of the digital Driver’s Licence is underway.
GOV.UK One Login has been used by over 13 million people to access more than 120 government services, creating simpler, more joined-up interactions with government.
AI Scaling Across Government
2025 marked the year AI tools started to scale across government. The NHS now uses AI to predict demand in 50 A&E wards, while over 1,000 probation officers use bespoke transcription tools in their meetings.
A new AI tool called Consult, which automates analysis of public consultations, achieved a median review time of 23 seconds per response, dramatically reducing the hundreds of days previously required for manual processing.
GOV.UK Chat, tested in public pilots on both the website and app, will roll out to the GOV.UK app early this year before expanding across the website.
CustomerFirst and Workforce Investment
GDS has launched CustomerFirst, a new team using AI and service design to transform customer services across government. The team is already working with DVLA to cut wait times and backlogs.
The Prime Minister has set a target for one in 10 civil servants to work in technology and digital roles by 2030. New programmes include an AI accelerator for upskilling and leadership development for technical leaders.
Looking Forward
For UK businesses, this roadmap signals continued government commitment to digital transformation and AI adoption. Organisations working with public sector clients should note the emphasis on common API standards and the National Digital Exchange platform, which aims to unlock £1.2 billion in annual savings through improved technology procurement.
