Hyperscaler

The largest cloud and technology companies that build and operate the data centres and computing infrastructure behind AI at global scale. The Guardian, reporting the IMF's October 2026 Global Financial Stability Report, described hyperscalers as "the companies building the underlying infrastructure for the AI rollout, including many vast datacentres", naming Amazon Web Services, Google, Meta and Oracle. The scale of their spending is now itself a financial-stability question: the IMF pointed to "growing evidence" that a successful AI rollout "may not require investment on the massive scale being undertaken by 'hyperscaler' firms". For UK businesses, hyperscalers matter twice over, as the suppliers of most cloud and AI services and as the customers whose demand underwrites data centre projects in Britain.
