Frontier AI
The most capable AI models available at a given time. For the 2023 AI Safety Summit, the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology defined frontier AI as "highly capable general-purpose AI models that can perform a wide variety of tasks and match or exceed the capabilities present in today's most advanced models". The definition is tied to "today's most advanced models", so which models count moves as the technology does, and the same paper notes that "frontier AI systems may not be underpinned by LLMs" in future. For businesses, the label describes a capability tier rather than a product, so it is worth asking which model a supplier means when it calls an offering frontier.
