TL;DR
OpenAI announced on 21 October that its frontier models and Codex agentic coding workflows will be offered inside Google Cloud’s Model Garden. Customers will buy them through Google Cloud Marketplace and can draw down existing Google Cloud spending commitments to pay for them. General availability is planned “in the coming weeks”, and OpenAI says Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.
What is being offered
The deal puts OpenAI’s models into Model Garden, the catalogue Google Cloud customers already use to choose and deploy AI models. OpenAI pitches it at organisations building agentic workflows and modernising software development, with Google’s access controls, central data governance and infrastructure wrapped around the models.
The commercial detail may matter most to buyers. Purchases go through Google Cloud Marketplace, so enterprises with committed spend on Google Cloud can put that budget towards OpenAI models. OpenAI adds that the Gemini Agent and Google Antigravity will “soon” offer its models as well.
Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president and co-founder, said the aim was to make the company’s models and Codex “available where customers are already building”. Thomas Kurian, Google Cloud’s chief executive, framed it as model choice: customers picking “the right model for any given job”.
Context
The announcement is short and leaves several things unsaid. It does not name which models will be included at launch, give pricing, or say which Google Cloud regions will host them. That last point matters for UK organisations with data residency requirements, who will need to check where processing takes place before moving workloads.
Kurian presented it as part of offering customers a broad selection of models, while OpenAI was careful to note that Microsoft remains its main cloud home.
Looking forward
In our view, the practical effect for UK businesses already committed to Google Cloud is less procurement friction: OpenAI models become another line on an existing bill. That should make it easier to compare OpenAI’s models with others on the same data and governance setup. Watch for the launch model list, regional availability and whether pricing matches OpenAI’s direct rates when general availability arrives.
