TL;DR

Pilotless fixed-wing aircraft are already earning money spraying crops in California and Brazil, cleared by regulators for defined commercial work. Britain has authorised no equivalent long-term operation, leaving the domestic firm Windracers waiting on permission to run cargo flights to Shetland and Orkney — which its founder believes would be the first heavy-lift drone freight service anywhere.

What has actually been approved

The American clearance is narrow by design. Pyka’s crop sprayer is the largest autonomous fixed-wing aircraft permitted for civilian commercial work in the US, but only within tightly bounded agricultural operations, and only with a ground operator plus a visual observer present. Brazil, whose rules are looser, approved it earlier; about a dozen of the aircraft are spraying cotton and soybeans there now.

The machines themselves are unremarkable engineering with remarkable software. Electric, an 11.5-metre wingspan, a 300-litre tank, roughly 35 minutes aloft. Engineers outline the target area and the system plans a route around obstacles already mapped, takes off, sprays, lands itself for a refill and battery change, then resumes where it stopped. That is autonomy rather than autopilot: not assistance during the cruise, but responsibility for the whole flight.

Why aviation lags driving

Stanford’s Mykel Kochenderfer offers two reasons the technology arrived after self-driving cars despite the sky being a more orderly place than a road. Capital went to cars. And aviation is held to a far higher safety bar, because the consequences of getting it wrong are worse. Military contracts have carried much of the development instead, with lighter regulatory friction.

Pilot bodies are unpersuaded. The US airline pilots’ union calls taking the pilot out a serious gamble and a step too far, while crop-dusting representatives note the small uncrewed aircraft are difficult for their own members to see.

Looking forward

Windracers is the British test case, and the Northern Isles are a sensible place to start: thin margins, difficult weather, communities that genuinely lack alternatives. Its aircraft are also flying in Ukraine. The pattern echoes this week’s first CE certification for autonomous breast screening AI — in both fields the question has stopped being whether the system works and become who signs the certificate letting it operate unsupervised. On current evidence UK regulators intend to answer that question after everyone else has.
