TL;DR
Anthropic has agreed to rent computing capacity from Nscale in a six-year arrangement reported at roughly £33bn ($45bn), covering around 460 megawatts. Nscale is British; the site is in West Virginia, which is the part worth noticing.
The deal
A person familiar with the arrangement told Reuters the capacity will come from Nscale’s West Virginia campus and run on Nvidia’s Vera Rubin generation of chips. Bloomberg reported it first. Anthropic would not comment.
For a UK company this is an unusually large win. Nscale has been assembling data centre capacity at speed, and a contract of this size from a lab preparing to float gives it a revenue base that most European infrastructure firms never reach.
Anthropic’s spending problem
The number only makes sense against what Anthropic is already committed to. AMD agreed in July to supply it with tens of billions of dollars of servers while putting up to $5bn into the company. SpaceX’s flotation filing disclosed that Anthropic pays it $1.25bn every month through to May 2029 for access to the Colossus clusters. Against a current revenue run rate of $47bn, the lab is projecting somewhere near $190bn to $200bn by 2028.
Whether those projections hold is the question the whole sector now rests on. What is not in doubt is that the lab is contracting for capacity years ahead of the revenue meant to pay for it.
Looking forward
The uncomfortable detail for British readers is geography. The government has spent two years arguing that sovereign compute matters, and here a UK-headquartered supplier has signed its largest contract to build in America. That is a rational commercial decision — power is cheaper and faster to connect there — but it is also the precise outcome the domestic planning and grid debate was supposed to prevent.
