Sir Demis Hassabis is giving up the chief executive role at Google DeepMind to become its chairman and Alphabet’s first chief scientist. Koray Kavukcuoglu, who relocated from London to the United States last year, takes over daily control with the lesser title of senior vice-president. Four senior figures, including Jeff Dean, are leaving to start their own company.

Alphabet shares fell after the announcement — 4% by Reuters’ measure, 5.5pc by the Telegraph’s. Google has not said whether Kavukcuoglu will run the London lab from California or move back.

Hassabis told staff he wants room to think about what is coming rather than manage it: “I’ve been working towards AGI my whole life and now, like many of you, I feel it is close at hand.” He keeps the chief executive job at Isomorphic Labs, the drug-discovery business he spun out of DeepMind.

The departures matter as much as the promotion. Dean is joined by Sanjay Ghemawat, plus Gemini co-leads Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, in founding Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation aimed at machine learning and science research. That follows Noam Shazeer’s move to OpenAI in June and Nobel laureate John Jumper’s to Anthropic the same week.

Why the London angle is the story

DeepMind was founded in London in 2010 and bought by Google in 2014 for roughly £400m. Hassabis made keeping it in London a condition of that sale and spent years defending the lab’s independence inside Google, as the Telegraph notes. Handing operational control to a US-based executive reverses the arrangement he fought for.

Google Cloud leaders reportedly welcomed the change as good for commercialisation, and Kavukcuoglu is expected to steer Gemini towards products. That is a reasonable corporate instinct. It is also the opposite of the research-first posture that produced a Nobel Prize on British soil.

Looking forward

Britain’s AI strategy has leaned heavily on DeepMind’s presence as proof the country can host frontier research. Nothing has physically moved, and the lab’s staff and buildings remain in King’s Cross. But the reporting line now runs to California, and a flagship Gemini release has slipped past its June date while Anthropic and OpenAI recruit from the same bench. The question for ministers is whether a lab you host but do not direct still counts as sovereign capability.
