TL;DR

Spotify is expanding its AI-powered Prompted Playlist feature to Premium subscribers in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden. The tool generates custom playlists from natural language descriptions, drawing on listening history and current music trends.

Describe It, Hear It

After testing in New Zealand and launching in the US and Canada, Spotify’s Prompted Playlist feature has arrived for UK Premium subscribers. The tool lets users type a description — a mood, memory, genre, activity, or even a reference to a TV show — and receive a generated playlist tailored to the request.

Each generated track comes with a short explanation of why it was selected. Users can reference specific eras, instruments, or lyrics, and choose whether the playlist draws from their library or prioritises new music. Playlists can be set to refresh automatically on a daily or weekly schedule.

The feature is accessed by tapping “Create” and selecting “Prompted Playlist.” Spotify says it interprets themes including aesthetics and personal milestones, with prompts as broad or specific as users want.

Still in Beta

Spotify noted the feature remains in beta and may change based on feedback. Usage limits are in place — some users have reported hitting caps after roughly 20 to 30 prompts.

The launch is part of a wider AI push across the platform. Recent additions include Page Match, which scans physical book pages to jump to the corresponding audiobook position, and expanded song lyrics with global translations and offline access.

Looking Forward

Spotify co-CEO Gustav Soderström said earlier this month that the company’s best developers haven’t written a line of code since December thanks to AI — a sign of how deeply the technology is embedded across both its products and internal operations. With AI-generated playlists now available in four new markets, Spotify is betting that personalisation through natural language will become a core part of how people discover music.
