TL;DR
Google has launched an AI Professional Certificate programme, backed by employers including Walmart, Deloitte, Verizon, and Colgate-Palmolive. New Ipsos/Google research found only 14% of workers have received AI training, despite 70% of managers saying an AI-trained workforce is necessary for success.
What Happened
The programme builds on Google AI Essentials, which became the most popular course on Coursera of all time. The new certificate focuses on skills employers value most — communication, research, data analysis, content generation, planning, and what Google calls “vibe coding” (building apps without writing code). Participants receive three months of free access to Google AI Pro to practise with over 20 use cases.
Google worked with the Burning Glass Institute and the Skills-First Workforce Initiative to identify the most in-demand AI skills. The curriculum covers producing professional-grade marketing materials, conducting deep research, building infographics, data visualisation, and drafting communications for multiple audiences.
To support small businesses — which employ half of Americans — Google is offering the certificate and three months of Google Workspace Business Standard at no cost. The company is working with the US Chamber of Commerce and Small Business Development Centers to distribute the offer, with ADP, PayPal, and Verizon sharing resources across their networks.
Why It Matters
The gap between employer expectations and actual training provision is stark. The 70%/14% disconnect highlighted by the Ipsos research suggests demand for AI-skilled workers is running well ahead of supply. Google’s existing Career Certificates programme has reached over one million graduates globally, with 70% reporting positive career outcomes within six months.
The involvement of major employers like Walmart and Deloitte as early adopters signals that structured AI certification is moving from nice-to-have to baseline professional development.
Looking Forward
Google now includes AI training in every career certificate it offers. The AI Professional Certificate joins a growing market of employer-backed AI credentials, reflecting a broader industry push to formalise AI skills alongside traditional technical and business qualifications.
