TL;DR: Apple is working on smart glasses, an AI pendant and camera-equipped AirPods, all designed to connect to the iPhone and let Siri act on what users see around them. The glasses are expected to enter production in December ahead of a 2027 launch.
Three Devices, One AI Strategy
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing three new AI hardware products with built-in cameras that feed visual information to the iPhone, allowing Siri to “use visual context to carry out actions.”
The smart glasses, Apple’s most ambitious of the three, will compete directly with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. They will feature speakers, microphones and a high-resolution camera for photos and video, plus a second lens designed specifically for AI features. Users will be able to make phone calls, play music and ask Siri about their surroundings — identifying ingredients in a meal, recognising landmarks or prompting task reminders based on location.
Unlike Meta’s partnership approach with Ray-Ban and Oakley, Apple reportedly plans to design and build the frames in-house. Early prototypes used a cable connecting to a battery pack and iPhone, but newer versions have all components embedded in the frame. A display-equipped version remains “many years away.”
Beyond Glasses
Apple’s second device is an AirTag-sized AI pendant worn as a necklace or pin. It functions as an always-on camera for the iPhone with a built-in microphone for Siri prompts. While it includes its own chip, it will rely primarily on iPhone processing power. Bloomberg reports it could arrive as early as next year.
The third product is an upgraded version of AirPods with low-resolution cameras and AI that can analyse a wearer’s surroundings. These could launch later this year.
Looking Forward
Apple’s three-device approach signals a significant push into AI-aware wearables, building on its Google Gemini-powered Siri upgrade. For UK businesses already invested in Apple’s ecosystem, these devices could reshape how employees interact with AI in the field — from retail staff identifying products to engineers referencing technical information hands-free. The competitive dynamics with Meta’s established smart glasses line will be worth watching closely.
