TL;DR

Amazon MGM Studios is launching a closed beta in March for proprietary AI tools designed to streamline film and TV production. The tools focus on improving character consistency across shots and supporting pre- and post-production workflows. Initial outcomes are expected by May.

Industry Partners Join the Programme

The AI Studio, launched last summer, has been collaborating with notable industry figures including Robert Stromberg (known for “Maleficent”), Kunal Nayyar from “The Big Bang Theory”, and former Pixar animator Colin Brady to determine the best implementation approaches.

Amazon is also drawing on Amazon Web Services for support and plans to work with several large language model providers as part of the initiative.

Supporting Creatives, Not Replacing Them

Albert Cheng, who heads the AI Studios initiative, has been clear about the programme’s goals: supporting creative teams rather than replacing them. The focus is on improving efficiency and reducing costs while ensuring intellectual property protection—specifically preventing AI-generated content from being absorbed into other AI models.

Amazon’s “House of David” series already demonstrates the practical application, with season two featuring 350 AI-generated shots.

Industry Tensions Remain

The growing adoption of AI in Hollywood continues to stir debate. Workers across the industry express concern about implications for jobs, creativity and the future of filmmaking.

Netflix has also adopted generative AI, with co-CEO Ted Sarandos revealing that its series “The Eternaut” used the technology to create a building collapse scene.

Looking Forward

Amazon’s beta launch arrives against a backdrop of workforce changes. The company recently eliminated 16,000 jobs in January following 14,000 layoffs last October, citing AI-driven efficiencies among the factors. The March beta will provide clearer signals about how these tools might reshape production workflows across the industry.
