TL;DR

Amazon is reportedly negotiating to invest at least $50 billion in OpenAI, which is seeking $100 billion in total new funding. The deal would be notable given Amazon’s existing $8 billion investment in OpenAI rival Anthropic.

Record-Breaking Funding Round

OpenAI, already valued at $500 billion, is pursuing another $100 billion in investment that could push its valuation to $830 billion. According to The Wall Street Journal, Amazon may contribute half of that record-breaking round.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is reportedly leading negotiations with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman directly. Neither company has commented on the discussions.

A Complex Competitive Landscape

The potential deal creates an unusual dynamic. Amazon’s AWS serves as the primary cloud and training provider for Anthropic, OpenAI’s closest competitor. Amazon has invested at least $8 billion in Anthropic and recently opened an $11 billion data centre campus in Indiana designed exclusively to run Anthropic models.

Multiple Parties at the Table

OpenAI has been busy on the fundraising front. The company has reportedly held discussions with sovereign wealth funds in the Middle East, as well as Nvidia, Microsoft, and SoftBank. The funding round is expected to close by the end of Q1.

For Amazon, investing in both leading AI model providers would secure access to top-tier AI capabilities regardless of which company pulls ahead in the competitive race.
